#PHSfit College of the Day: Hampton University

Right at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Hampton University continues its tradition as one of the finest HBCU's in the nation.  Many of the admitted students have a GPA of at least 2.5, and ACT of at least 18. Notable alumni include Wanda Sykes and the editor-in-chief of Essence magazine.

#PHSfit College of the day: California University of Pennsylvania

About four hours away in a distant southern suburb of Pittsburgh, you'll find California University of Pennsylvania, a public college just a little larger than Morgan State. Imagine McDaniel College, only three times its size. Cal-U is known for its education programs, as well as liberal arts and sciences. Admission is competitive, making it comparable to Towson University or UMBC.

#PHSfit College of the Day: John Jay College

For many of the students who aspire to study criminal justice, you should consider the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, within the City University system of New York, located three blocks west of Central Park in Manhattan. Admission is competitive, and you are recommended to have three world language credits in high school for consideration. The average high school GPA of their students is in the low B range, and the average ACT score is around 20.

..and now we wait.

Just like trying out for teams and ensembles, running in elections, and applying for jobs and colleges requires taking a risk and putting yourself out there, Mr. Goldman has submitted the application for National School Counselor of the year.

Thanks to Ms. Bailey for the nomination to state SCOY, the state honor became official this past spring. Adding bonus recognition, the First Lady even mentioned the Maryland Secondary School Counselor of the Year in a speech this summer when announcing that the National School Counselor of the Year would be invited to the White House
(skip to 16 minutes in, if you want to cut to the shout-out)
So now that the application for the National award has been submitted, you can see the video here:

So cross your fingers, everyone, and thank you to everyone who contributed to the video!

Upcoming program: H.O.M.E. at JHU

JHU Admissions Logo
Dear Colleague,
Greetings from Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University! As you begin to gear up for the coming school year, we wanted to tell you about our annual program for underrepresented students. The Hopkins Overnight Multicultural Experience (H.O.M.E)—our on-campus, overnight experience connecting African American, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and multiracial high school seniors to the clubs, organizations, and resources that bring together our multicultural community—will take place on September 25-27, 2014.
This is a great opportunity for students to get a first-hand look at what Johns Hopkins is all about, from academics to life outside the classroom, as they spend time on our campus getting to know our current students. Attendees will also have a chance to explore the city of Baltimore, take part in an application workshop, and sit in on classes. The program concludes with our fall Open House on September 27.
Space is limited for H.O.M.E. and an application is required. Students interested in participating should visit apply.jhu.edu/homewood for more information and to apply. Applications and other required materials, including a transcript and SAT/ACT scores (if available), must be received by Friday, September 5, at 5:00 p.m. There is limited travel assistance available for qualified program attendees.
We hope you will share this information with any seniors you think would be a good match for H.O.M.E. If you or your students have any additional questions, please contact us at home.program@jhu.edu. We hope your students will choose to apply for this unique overnight experience at Johns Hopkins!

Sincerely,
H.O.M.E.Team
