#PHSfit College of the Day: Binghamton University

SUNY is a public institution that was founded in 1946. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 11,787, its setting is suburban, and the campus size is 930 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Binghamton University--SUNY's ranking in the 2012 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 90. Founded in 1782, Washington College is a small, liberal arts, co-ed college on the Eastern Shore, that allows and encourages its students to chart their own path toward educational fulfillment and intellectual challenge. Located about two and a half hours away, just past Reading, Pennsylvania, is Kutztown University. Kutztown is part of Pennsylvania's state system of higher education, and is considered to be strong in health sciences, education, arts, and business majors. Most admitted students had GPAs near 3.1 and an ACT score of 20.

About three and a half hours to the north, in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, lies a small Catholic College called King's College. King's College is an SAT-optional college, and definitely considers applicants' strength of academic curriculum, which means that getting decent grades doesn't mean as much if those grades are all in easy classes.

What is the United States Merchant Marine Academy? The Merchant Marine Academy is where young people who long for the sea go to learn about the leadership skills necessary to run a ship, or a fleet of ships, in the thriving business of marine trade. Because it is a United States Service academy, you must secure a nomination from an elected official, which is not impossible, and demonstrate strong academics and be in good physical health. USMMA is in King's Point, Queens, New York.

#PHSfit College of the Day: Haverford College

Haverford College is a liberal arts college located near the King of Prussia mall near Philadelphia that has had a very long connection with Bryn Mawr College. For many years, Haverford was the men's college as Bryn Mawr's brother, but now, Haverford is actually 47% men. Haverford boasts a 9 to 1 student to faculty ratio, but admission is quite competitive. Over 90% of their students graduate in the top tenth of their high school class, and score close to 700 on each SAT test.

#PHSfit College of the Day: James Madison University

In the college town of Harrisonburg Virginia, James Madison University is a strong and growing option for students in the second or third tenths of their class, and want to get the most of their college experience. Because it is as large as Towson or Delaware, JMU offers diversity of academic study and student background, but because of its remote location, does not have as much of a neighborhood college, so you really feel like you're going "away" to college, at that ideal three-hour drive mark.

#PHSfit College of the Day: Mansfield University

Located four hours due north of Baltimore, Mansfield University is part of Pennsylvania's state system of higher education, and is similar to Frostburg State in other ways as well, like culture, surroundings, size, and admissions standards. Mansfield is a good fit for someone with a 3.0 GPA and looking to study in a quiet location amid nature and the mountains. There is great skiing, as well.

Drexel University is a research-based university just a little smaller than Towson University, but is different from Towson in that it is located in the city of Philadelphia. Drexel is well kno wn for its medical school and engineering and information science programs. Something that makes Drexel unique is that, like Northeastern University in Boston, students basically go for five years because there is a co-op program integrated into its curriculum, which is a really great way to open doors for employment.

Touro College is a Jewish-sponsored independent institution of higher learning, located in Brooklyn, New York. It houses several large graduate-level medical and other professional schools, but its undergraduate population is also as large as Salisbury University. Admission is mildly competitive, with most students graduating with a B average and SAT scores just over 500. This school is an excellent example of a small college that is looking for students who crave an academic challenge, without necessarily being perfect.

Formerly known as Columbia Union College, Washington Adventist University is a private college, located outside Washington, DC. It is ranked by the US News and World Report, and its enrollment continues to grow. Offering the more popular majors with intimate class sizes, students get a truly supportive education without having to travel too far from home.

#PHSfit College of the Day: American University

AmericanUniversity is a competitive university in northwest Washington, DC. Admissions are more competitive than Towson, but not much more so than College Park. The campus itself is nestled in a residential section of the city, but feels simultaneously classic and contemporary. Many students make American their back-up to George Washington, and is comparable to a college like Boston University.

#PHSfit College of the Day: University of Mary Washington

If you take Frostburg State University, and instead of being in a small town in the mountains of western Maryland, you put it in a small town along the James River, you get the University of Mary Washington. UMW offers a wealth of educational variety, a student body as large as 5000 students, and a reasonable post-secondary alternative to Frostburg, Shippensburg, York College, and Christopher Newport U.

Gettysburg College has earned its strong academic reputation. Since its founding in 1832, the College has upheld a rigorous commitment to the liberal arts in all their breadth and depth. On a beautiful campus in a world-famous town, 2,600 students discover their intellectual passion through more than 67 academic programs. There are no bystanders here. #PHSfit College of the Day: Rowan University

In the heart of southern New Jersey, in a residential suburb of Philadelphia near Joe Flacco's home town, Rowan University is a public university known for education, liberal arts and engineering majors. With 11,000 students and an average high school GPA near 4.0, Rowan could easily be considered New Jersey's version of UVA or Villanova University.

#PHSfit College of the Day: University of Delaware

Just about an hour up Interstate 95, you'll find Mr. Mitzel and Mr. Nichols's alma mater, the University of Delaware. U-D is a large research university about the same size as James Madison and Towson University, but the admissions criteria is a little harder to predict. Students with a 3.0 have been admitted, and students with 3.3 have been denied admission. What is important to remember is that if being a Blue Hen is appealing to you, then you should visit and consider applying - even if it ends up being a "reach" school for you, at least you gave it a shot.

#PHSfit College of the Day: Christopher Newport University

Four hours south of here, right near  the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Christopher Newport University operates a well-respected liberal arts institution just about the size of Frostburg State University. With over 80 majors, CNU offers the variety of study for its students to enjoy smaller class sizes than most other state colleges. Most admitted students have a GPA over 3.3, and individual SAT scores over 500. Its mission and profile would be similar to St. Mary's College of Maryland or UMBC.

#PHSfit College of the Day: Mercy College

Identified as a College of Distinction, Mercy College is located in a northern New York City suburb. There is a bit of a broad range of admitted test scores and GPA's, which seem to focus on ACT's between 18 and 24 and GPA between 2.8 and 3.5. Because of Mercy's commitment to giving students an opportunity, its multiple campuses around New York, and its private nondenominational status, it is similar to local colleges like York College and Stevenson University.

Located about 45 minutes outside New York, Drew University is a small selective liberal arts college, like McDaniel. Drew University is private, and affiliated with the Methodist Church. The average SAT score is about 550 on each test. The most popular majors are in biological sciences and pre-law subjects.

This Historically Black University is nestled in our nation’s capital, one of the most diverse cities around. Howard offers many majors including Anesthesiology, Black Politics, Education, International Business, Journalism, Sports Medicine, and so many more. Residence Halls are protected by 24/7 campus security. Howard offers many dining options to satisfy everyone’s cravings. Howard University offers several Division II teams including basketball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, and many more.
