#PHSfit College of the Day: La Salle University

Located in the quiet Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, La Salle University is a small liberal arts college that has a hands-on approach to learning. Its most popular majors are nursing, communication, education, and psychology. The average class size is 20 students, and all classes are taught by professors, rather than what you will find at larger universities. The average SAT is just under 500 on each test.

Having worked past its tumult of the 1970s, Kent State University maintains a reputation strong for student pride and achievement. Kent is six hours west of Baltimore, just south of Cleveland. Kent State offers over 100 majors, and in many ways, it is similar to Towson University, with its suburban and medium sized campus and student body.

A little smaller than Morgan State University, on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge to Manhattan, you'll find Fairleigh Dickinson University. In addition to having campuses in Vancouver and Great Britain, the Metropolitan campus offers dozens of majors, and of course many opportunities for internships and real world experience. Most of the admitted students scored just over 500 on each of their SATs.

At an hour away in the nation’s capital, the University of the District of Columbia was founded in 1851.  With majors in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Education, Mortuary Science, Social Work, and many more, this university offers a diverse learning experience. Home of the Firebirds, this school offers Division II teams for everyone.  UDC offers on-campus housing, or assistance with finding your own apartment. In a suburb of Pennsylvania's state capital lies Messiah College, a Christian liberal arts college about the same size as Coppin, but with different surroundings. Messiah College's Christian philosophy pervades its academic programming and campus culture, so this college will appeal to those students who really value that side of their identity.

Despite its reputation as a popular Catholic university, and its recent appearance at the NCAA mens' basketball tournament, Mount St Mary's University, or nicknamed The Mount, has quite a diverse selection of academic majors to study, and a fierce alumni network that can give you the support you need for getting your career started. The Mount is located only an hour north of Baltimore, in Emmittsburg, Maryland.

In the heart of Brooklyn, the New York City College of Technology offers programs in health, business, information, and artistic technology. City Tech has one of the more liberal admissions criteria among the CUNY system, with an average ACT score of 17 and an average high school GPA close to 2.5.

In order to be recognized as one of the Colleges That Change Lives, institutions must have a strong reputation for treating students as individuals and for teaching them, rather than leading groups of ID numbers through large lecture halls. Lynchburg College is one of those Colleges that Change Lives.  Most students with an ACT of about 23 and a B average have a good chance at attending Lynchburg College at its picturesque campus about five hours away in southern Virginia.

Situated right near the bridge tunnel where the Chesapeake Bay opens up into the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk State University is an HBCU known to be among the best higher education values in Virginia. Going up the Susquehanna River past Harrisburg, you will see Bloomsburg University, home to notable undergraduate programs in American Sign Language, Criminal Justice, and Nursing. A typical Bloomsburg student's high school performance was in the top 25% of their class, and each SAT score is about 530.

Its location in a large suburb and its reputation for research and education also make it similar to UMBC. The average SAT of admitted students is just over 500, and half of their students graduated in the top third of their high school class.

McDaniel College, located in Westminster, is not very far away geographically, but by the time you've traveled the Westminster Pike into the Carroll County farmlands, you step into another time and place. McDaniel College is listed as one of the Colleges That Change Lives, known for giving its students the support and encouragement they need to develop into highly functioning adults, rather than treating them like nameless faces in the crowd.
